Mise En Scene
Setting
• Location and Time: For our film, we decided to use the abandoned wings of our school's theatre. The dark ambiance it creates reflects the dark, twisted atmosphere of our movie and connects with the plot points of Abby's character's maniacal nature.
• Environment and Props: for props, we used just everyday weapons (i.e. bats and heavy objects) this adds to the natural sense of the movie and benefits the production by being cost-effective and easy to access. As for the environment, we have flickering lights to add depth and reinforce themes of danger and suspense.
• Composition and Narrative Impact: We have establishing points throughout the fighting scenes that add depth to Emma's character in contrast with not just the environment but with the characters such as Abby and the Goons.
Lighting
• High Key vs. Low Key: The movie scene taking place in a dark place references the theme and tone of the overall movie having the establishing scene take place in a dark lowkey lighting environment highlights the ominous and chaotic themes the movie brings.
• High Contrast and Symbolism: The lighting represents the contrast between the rest of the movie aspects and Emma's character. The dark surroundings and lowkey lighting in contrast to Emma pure pure-natured clothes and other physical elements symbolize Emma's difference in personality and perspective and the other surrounding aspects of the environment including other characters (i.e. Abby).
Costumes
• Function and Style: Nice breathable material costumes easy to fight in tactical and set within the time frame of the film.
• Color Psychology: We used color to signal allegiances and ulterior motives. Abby the secret antagonist wears the same color as the goons (black) unlike Emma who wears white signifying her protagonist and kind nature. Additionally, Abby wears red accents to highlight and symbolize her violent bloodlust tendencies.
Actor’s Movements and Blocking
• Positioning and Power: The power dynamic within the movie shows the dynamic between the two girls (Emma and Abby). Abby usually tends to start conflict and is more aggressive and chaotic. Emma's character on the other hand is also aggressive in a more restrained manner and nebulous nature as shes not as nimble in combat as Abby. This contrast also highlights the two girls differences within their attitude in battle as Abby is more comfortable and finds it more enjoyable to hurt people as Emma is not as comfortable and its harder to actually fight others.
• Choreography and Composition: The tag team the two girls show within the film shows their relationship and bond they are close we do this to add emphasis on their bond to allow a bigger climax once the secret is revealed and the true intention of Abby has revealed it adds more drama to this plot twist and creates a more captivating storyline.
• Facial Expressions and Gestures: There is a certain moment within the fighting where Abby is letting her carnage loose on the goon #1 while choking him. The camera faces on Abbys face smiling with a grin. Within this moment you can see Abby smiling as she disposes with the goon. this sparks the first foreshadowing of Abby's evil and malicious nature that will be further explored within the film.
