Location
Our initial goal was to find a captivating abandoned building for filming that would add character and depth to our project. After extensive consultations with our location advisor, Zoe Gonzalez, we stumbled upon a dilapidated nursing home. Upon successfully gaining entry, we eagerly scouted potential shooting spots, hoping to capture the right atmosphere for our film.
We began our exploration on the ground floor, but we were quickly deterred by the scattered rubble and debris cluttered the area, created an almost oppressive environment. Moving on to the second floor, we found ourselves confronting the same unfortunate fate; piles of trash alongside walls marred by vulgar graffiti destroyed the potential ambiance we sought. The third floor proved no better, with its air thickening under the weight of litter and graffiti.
Finally, with a mix of trepidation and hope, we ascended to the fourth floor. To our relief, this level appeared to be a hidden gem amid the decay. The floors here were relatively clean, and while some graffiti could be spotted, it was less intrusive and even downright artistic in places. Bathed in ample natural light pouring through cracked windows, this room held the promise of the atmosphere we imagined for our film. Yet, there were significant challenges. Shooting here would be illegal, raising alarm bells about potential police intervention. Additionally, the presence of sharp shards of glass scattered across the floor sparked concern among our actors—Olivia Phillips, Sunny Bradley, Trent Rainer, Sam Schatzberg, and Casey Baird—making them uneasy about the prospect of filming. Furthermore, we were keenly aware of the lurking health hazards, given that the nursing home had been closed for years due to a notorious black mold infestation. What initially seemed like the perfect filming location morphed into a daunting last resort.
Realizing the need for alternatives, we shifted our focus to the auditorium of our school, an environment rich with potential. For a bit of context, Eau Gallie High School boasts an auditorium where vibrant laughter and applause fills the air. The corridors flanking the stage are lined with storage rooms, providing direct access to the light command center, which could be invaluable for our project. This space emerged as our new ideal location, devoid of health risks and free from the anxiety of authority intervention.
To finalize our choice, we reached out to our drama director, Rachel Zeligman. After discussing our vision for the project, she graciously granted us permission to film in the auditorium, solidifying our new filming location. We left, already envisioning how we would transform the space for our project. Here are the photos and videos documenting our findings, capturing the essence of our journey.
